Vinyl siding is always a good choice for housing exterior. It is long lasting, easy to maintain, and inexpensive. If you have decided to buy vinyl siding for your home then you will have a lot of brands and options to choose from, and you may be wondering how to get the best quality for your money. As with all things, you largely get what you pay for. The good news is that even the more expensive kinds of vinyl siding are more affordable than most other siding options. There are three main aspects you should consider in choosing your brand: durability, color fastness, and insulation.

The most common complaint about vinyl siding is that when it gets very cold it can become brittle and be easy damaged by flying balls or debris from a storm. Generally speaking, thicker siding is going to be more rigid and more resistant to those kinds of impacts. The highest grade vinyl is going to be around .52 mils in thickness. Minimal thickness is .40 mils. Some companies specifically add chemicals designed to increase the siding’s durability; look for information on in when researching a brand.

Color fastness is also important because you should not ever have to paint your vinyl siding, but some people eventually do so anyway because their siding has become so faded. Look for siding that comes with a UV coating to help prevent fading. You should also be aware when you pick out your color that the more intense or brilliant the color you pick, the more susceptible is to fading. Neutral and earth tones will stand up better over the course of decades than jewel tones; they may easier on the eye and easier to resell, too.

Finally, consider investing in insulated vinyl siding, which can be up to five times better insulated than the lowest grades are. It will cost more, but it will get you lower heating and cooling bills too. The insulated varieties are often the strongest and most rigid as well, which makes them not only impact resistant, but also means that they look and feel more like wood.

Removing vinyl siding from your house is something you can easily do yourself to save on having to hire a contractor. You may want to do this to entirely remove all the vinyl siding from your house or to take off sections to replace with new vinyl siding. Removing vinyl siding is not difficult. All it takes is a few simple tools and some of your time and patience to get the job done. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to remove vinyl siding from your house.

You will need to have a few simple tools for removing vinyl siding. The first thing you will need is a tool called a zip tool. A zip tool is a vinyl siding removal tool. The zip tool has a flat metal blade that bends at an angle and forms a hook. The hook is what you will insert beneath the vinyl siding panel to remove the siding from the house. You can pick up a zip tool at your local hardware or home improvement store. You will also need a pry bar and hammer for removing nails from the vinyl siding panels.

The first thing you will want to do is to identify the vinyl siding panel that you want to remove. Next find the bottom edge of the vinyl panel just above the piece of vinyl siding you want to remove. Slide your zip tool along the lower edge and hook it into the notch.

Pull down on the zip tool. This will unlock the vinyl siding panel you are trying to remove from the vinyl siding above. Continue to hook the notch on the vinyl siding panel all along its length.

Once the vinyl siding panel is unlocked you can lift it up to expose the nail strip that is attaching the vinyl siding to the house. Use your hammer or a pry bar to remove the nails.

Once you have removed the nails from the piece of vinyl siding you can push the vinyl siding down to completely unlock the panel and remove it. Before doing this it is a good idea to draw a line above the top of the siding panel you are removing. This will help you when install the replacement siding in the proper location.

As you can see, removing vinyl siding from your house is not a hard thing to do. It only requires a few simple tools and some of your time. Just follow these step-by-step instructions and you will have vinyl siding removed from your house in no time at all.

Cedar siding is a very durable and aesthetically pleasing siding for your home. The rich color and texture makes your home look very warm and attractive. To keep you cedar siding properly maintained and looking it’s best, you should clean the siding at least once a year. You can either hire someone to do it for you or do the job yourself. Cleaning cedar siding is not a hard job to do. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to clean cedar siding.

Step 1 Gather your necessary equipment and supplies

You will need rubber gloves, cleaning detergent, bleach, bucket, scrub brush, and power washer. You can rent or purchase a power washer at a hardware or home improvement store. If you do not want to invest in a power washer at this time you can also use an ordinary garden hose.

Step 2 Prepare your cleaning solution

Add cleaning detergent and a quarter cup of bleach to a gallon of warm water. Be sure to wear rubber gloves so that the bleach does not burn your skin.

Step 3 Scrub the cedar shingles with your cleaning solution

Use your scrub brush and cleaning solution to thoroughly scrub the cedar siding on your house. Start at the top and work your way down the side of the house. Scrub only one section at a time and do not allow the cleaning solution to dry on the house.

Step 4 Rinse the cedar siding using the power washer

Once you have finished scrubbing a section of cedar siding, use the power washer to rinse the cleaning solution from the siding. Make sure to set the power washer to the gentlest setting. You may be tempted to turn the power washer on full blast, but you can damage the cedar wood if you do this. Spray the siding using back and forth strokes. Start at the top of the house and work your way down, allowing the water to wash down the side of the house.

Continue this process of scrubbing a section of cedar siding with your cleaning solution and then washing it off with the power washer until you have cleaned all of the cedar siding on your house.

As you can see by the step-by-step instructions, cleaning your cedar siding is not a hard thing to do. It just takes a few simple pieces of equipment and supplies and some of your time and patience. Cleaning your cedar siding at least once a year is definitely worth it to keep your siding well maintained and looking beautiful.

Spray foam roofing insulation is gaining in popularity with homeowners due to the energy savings it provides. Even better is that the energy savings are immediate and quite substantial for many homeowners. Foam roofing is a green environmentally friendly solution for building sustainability and energy use reduction.

Energy Star approved reflective coating foam roofing can be used in just about every type of roofing situation, ranging from traditional flat roofing applications to unique designs.

Spray polyurethane foam roofing is not new, the material and application process have been around for nearly 50 years. As a roofing material it has come a long way. The process and foam mixture has proven itself to be affordable and long lasting if properly maintained. Foam roofing has many benefits over traditional roofing material and application or installation methods. Spray foam roofing is seamless, flexible, lightweight, and requires minimal maintenance.

The energy savings can make the cost recovery time much faster which benefits the building owner as well as the environment. Even when you factor in surety bond cost for the contractor, it’s still a savings. Saving money is always a good reason to consider using a particular product but the benefits to the environment should not be overlooked.

If you are still putting off cleaning the vinyl siding on your house, here are a few tips to show you how easy it is to clean vinyl siding and keep your house looking clean and well maintained. Keep in mind that the vinyl siding on your house is a significant investment and one of the first things people see when they look at your house. You want to protect your investment and keep your home looking clean and well maintained. You should clean your vinyl siding at least once a year. Here are step-by-step instructions to show you how easy it is to clean vinyl siding.

Step 1 Gather the necessary supplies you will need to clean your vinyl siding

You will need a ladder, pressure washer or garden hose, a bucket, a long-handled bristle brush, and some laundry detergent or dish washing liquid. You can either rent or purchase a power washer. This will make the job easier, however you can use a garden hose if you don’t want to invest in a pressure washer at this time.

Step 2 Do your prep work

If you have plants and flowers near the house you will want to cover them with plastic so they do not get sprayed with your cleaning solution. You will also want to be sure all windows and doors are closed and sealed.

Step 3 Rinse the vinyl siding on your house

Using a power washer or garden hose, rinse off the vinyl siding from top to bottom to rinse off the debris and dirt from your house. Make sure you do not turn on the power washer full blast. This could damage your vinyl siding.

Step 4 Prepare your cleaning formula

You can use either laundry detergent or dish washing liquid. Mix this in a bucket with half warm water, half cleaning solution.

Step 5 Clean the vinyl siding

Climb up on your ladder and start to clean the vinyl siding. Start at the top and work your way down the house. Use a long-handled brush, moving the brush from side to side down the house.

Step 6 Remove mildew and other stains from your vinyl siding

For mildew and other stains, add a little bleach to your bucket of cleaning solution. Scrub the stains off with a brush.

Step 7 Thoroughly rinse the cleaning solution off the house

Rinse the siding off with water using a power washer or garden hose as you go so that the cleaning solution doesn’t dry onto the siding.

As these step-by-step instructions show, cleaning the vinyl siding on your house is really not a hard chore to do at all. Keeping your vinyl siding clean and well maintained will keep your house looking attractive for you and for prospective buyers when it comes time to sell your home.

Many home improvement projects can be very expensive, costing tens of thousands of dollars. You will probably need to finance major home improvement projects with a loan of some kind. There are different types of loans available that you can use to finance your project, each having its own advantages as well as disadvantages. Here are four different types of home improvement loan options for you to consider to help you choose the best home improvement loan for you.

Option #1 Home Equity Loan

A home equity loan is a good option to consider for financing your home improvement project. The equity in your house serves as the collateral for the loan. You can either receive a cash payment or a line of credit. The advantage to the home equity loan is that the interest rate tends to be lower than other types of home improvement loans and the interest is usually tax deductible.

Option #2 Personal Loan

A personal loan is an unsecured loan, which means there is no collateral to secure the loan. Personal loans have a higher rate of interest than secured loans. These are also available as either a cash payment or a line of credit. The advantage is that you will not need any collateral to secure the loan. However, you will need to have sufficient income and a good credit history to qualify for the loan. The disadvantages are the higher interest rate and the interest is not tax deductible.

Option #3 Home Improvement Loan

Some lending intuitions offer loans that are specifically called home improvement loans. They are usually unsecured loans but sometimes might be secured by your house. They usually have higher interest rates than home equity loans.

Option #4 Refinance Your Home

Another option to consider for financing your home improvement project is to refinance your home mortgage along with your home improvement costs into a new mortgage. The advantage is you will only have one loan payment to make. You will need to check to see whether your existing mortgage has a prepayment penalty and compare the interest rate on your current mortgage versus what the interest rate would be if you refinanced. You will need to have sufficient equity in your home to cover adding the cost of the home improvement expenses to your mortgage. The interest will generally be tax deductible, just like most first and second mortgages are.

You have several options to consider when choosing a home improvement loan. You will need to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each home improvement loan type, along with your own personal situation such as the amount of equity you have in your home, your credit rating, and other considerations before you make your final decision on which home improvement loan is best for you.

If you need a professional to install replacement windows anywhere in Massachusetts call on the window replacement pros at Davidnessjr.com call 888-637-7571 anytime to request your free window replacement consultation.

Installing replacement windows in your house can be a moderately easy home improvement project as long as you are patient. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to install a replacement window.

Step 1 Measure Your Windows

The first thing you need to do is measure your old windows. Measure the window jamb at the bottom, center and top. Keep the smallest measurements for both the height and width. You want your replacement windows to be about 1/4 inch smaller for both the height and width of the window opening.

Step 2 Collect the tools and supplies you will need to install your replacement windows

You will need screwdrivers, a hammer, level, utility knife, chisel, tape measure, caulking gun, interior and exterior caulking, safety glasses and shims.

Step 3 Remove interior stop molding

Place a putty knife in between the window casing and inside stop molding to remove the stop molding on each side of the window.

Step 4 Remove the lower sash

After you have the stop molding off you can remove the lower sash. If there is rope cord, remove it from the sash and remove the pulley. Cover up the opening with tin.

Step 5 Remove parting stops

The parting stops are pieces of wood dividing the inside and outside sash, and possibly one at the top of the window. Using a chisel, remove all the parting stops. You will want the jam to be flush.

Step 6 Remove outside sash

Remove and cut any cords and pulleys in the sash. Do not remove exterior stop that extends past the window jamb. Your new window will rest up against the exterior stop.

Step 7 Shim the jamb

If necessary, adjust the width of the opening.

Step 8 Test the fit of your new window

Place your new window in the opening to make sure it fits well and you still have room to make adjustments if necessary. If the window is a good fit, remove it from the opening and apply caulking across the exterior stop and over the bottom sill. This is to make sure there will be tight seal around the entire window.

Step 9 Place your window into the opening

Place your window into the center of the window. To make sure it is square you can measure diagonally from the top to the bottom on both sides. Make sure the measurements are equal. Use shims if necessary. Also use your level to make sure the window is plumb and level.

Step 10 Screw down the window into the jamb

Step 11 Install molding

You can either use the old molding or replace with new vinyl molding, using adhesive caulking.

Step 12 Adjust jamb screws

Adjust the jamb screws so that the sash will stay open.

Step 13 Caulk the window frame

If you follow these step-by-step instructions for how to install a replacement window, you will have new windows for your house in no time at all.

Adding a garage to your home can be one of the best home improvement projects you could ever do. Not only will a garage addition add significantly to your home’s value, but it will give you lots of extra storage and keep your vehicles and other machinery protected from the weather. A garage addition is a significant home improvement project and can be expensive. Here are some tips on how to estimate your costs for adding a garage to your house.

Step 1 Decide on the size of the garage

The size of the garage will be in large dependent on the size of your house and lot. You also need to determine what you will use your garage for. Is it primarily to store one or two cars, do you need extra storage or workshop space? These are all questions that will help you determine the size of your garage. Obviously, the larger your garage is the more materials it will take, and this will add to the cost.

Step 2 Find out the zoning and coding restrictions for your garage

Make sure to do this early in your garage addition project. Find out what permits you need and what their costs will be.

Step 3 Obtain quotes from at least 3 general contractors

Price quotes can vary significantly from contractor to contractor so you will want to get at least three quotes so that you can compare pricing. Be sure to do your homework and check to see that the contractor complies with all licensing requirements, is fully insured, is experienced with garage additions, and can provide you with good references from satisfied customers.

Step 4 Select a garage door

Usually the generally contractor leaves it up to the homeowner to select their garage door and some other finishing touches. You can find garage doors at home improvement stores. The quality of the garage door and design will factor into the cost.

Step 5 Compare the quotes from the general contractors.

Don’t make your final decision on a contractor on price alone. Remember to factor in their qualifications, level of professionalism, their experience with garage additions, their references, your rapport with the contractors and any other factors that are important to you.

Step 6 Select your general contractor and sign a contract

Once you have selected the general contractor for your garage addition, you will need to sign a contract. Be sure to read all the fine print to make sure all the costs are spelled out, the start and end dates, a payment schedule, and any other things you have agreed to.

If you do your homework and plan your garage addition ahead of time, you should be able to get a garage built that fits your needs and budget.

Gutters are a critical component of your house. They help to keep water from collecting on your roof and also channel water away from the siding and foundation. Choosing gutters for your home can seem difficult at first. There are many different sizes, materials and styles to choose from. You will want gutters that match or blend in with the style of your house, that are durable, easy to maintain, and fit your budget. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best gutters for your house.

One of the first considerations will be determining which size gutter you should choose. If you live in areas where there is heavy amounts of rain you will probably want to choose 7″ gutters. In areas where there is less rain, 5-6″ gutters should suffice.

Next you will want to consider the type of material your gutters will be made of. The most common types of gutters are vinyl and aluminum. They can also be made from other materials such as copper or steel. There are advantages and disadvantage to each type of material.

Vinyl gutters are very lightweight and easy to maintain. They also come in many colors so that you can match them to the color of your home. The disadvantage to vinyl gutters is they are not as strong as some of the other gutter types.

Aluminum gutters are light weight and the least expensive gutter option, however they do require more maintenance than other types of gutters.

Steel gutters will last the longest but can rust if you do not properly treat them. They are also more expensive than either aluminum or vinyl gutters.

Copper gutters are also long lasting and aesthetically pleasing, but are also more expensive than vinyl or aluminum.

Another choice to make is whether you want to have seamless gutters or ones that comes in sections. Seamless gutters are generally considered to be better. There is less chance of leaks or sags developing. Seamless gutters are more expensive and will require a professional to install them.

You can either choose to hire a contractor to install your gutters or do it yourself. You should strongly consider having your gutters professionally installed to make sure the job is done right. It is well worth the cost to protect your home from potential water damage and rot.

When it comes time to choose new doors for your house you will discover that wooden doors come in a variety of woods as well as styles. Here are a few tips to help you choose the best wooden doors for your home.

Tip #1 Find a reputable door manufacturer or dealer

One of the best ways to find quality wooden doors for your home is to compare different doors at a reputable door manufacturer or dealer location. These establishments will have a wide variety of doors for you to review and knowledgeable staff which can help you determine which are the best wooden doors for your home.

Tip #2 Choose solid wooden doors

You can choose between hollow core or solid wooden doors. Hollow core doors are made of fiberboards with holes or gaps. They are inexpensive and lightweight, but are not as durable as solid wooden doors. Some of the more solid woods include oak, hickory and mahogany. These doors are not only solid but very beautiful as well. The extra price you pay for a solid wooden door is well worth it. Make sure when you purchase your wooden doors that you buy them from a reputable manufacturer or dealer.

Tip #3 Choose your door style

Wooden doors come in various door panel styles. There are four and six panel doors, plain doors and doors with embellishments. You can also paint your wooden doors. Choose doors that will go with the style and decor of your house.

Tip #4 Weatherize your door

One thing you need to take into consideration when choosing wooden doors for your home is the weather conditions where you live. Wood does tend to contract and expand when the weather changes. One thing that can help with this problem is to choose wooden doors with fiberboard panels. These wooden doors are very durable and can withstand changing weather and fluctuations in temperature.

Tip #5 Make sure there is plenty of clearance between the door and the floor.

If the bottom of the door is constantly scraping against the floor it will damage and scratch the floor. You want to have at least a half-inch gap between the bottom of the wooden door and the floor.

Choosing new wooden doors for your home can be a very enjoyable experience. If you keep the above tips in mind when you shop, you are likely to end up very happy with your new wooden doors for your home.
