How To Clean Vinyl Siding In 7 Easy Steps

If you are still putting off cleaning the vinyl siding on your house, here are a few tips to show you how easy it is to clean vinyl siding and keep your house looking clean and well maintained.   Keep in mind that the vinyl siding on your house is a significant investment and one of the first things people see when they look at your house.  You want to protect your investment and keep your home looking clean and well maintained.  You should clean your vinyl siding at least once a year.  Here are step-by-step instructions to show you how easy it is to clean vinyl siding.

Step 1 Gather the necessary supplies you will need to clean your vinyl siding

You will need a ladder, pressure washer or garden hose, a bucket, a long-handled bristle brush, and some laundry detergent or dish washing liquid.  You can either rent or purchase a power washer.  This will make the job easier, however you can use a garden hose if you don’t want to invest in a pressure washer at this time.

Step 2 Do your prep work

If you have plants and flowers near the house you will want to cover them with plastic so they do not get sprayed with your cleaning solution.  You will also want to be sure all windows and doors are closed and sealed.

Step 3 Rinse the vinyl siding on your house

Using a power washer or garden hose, rinse off the vinyl siding from top to bottom to rinse off the debris and dirt from your house.  Make sure you do not turn on the power washer full blast.  This could damage your vinyl siding.

Step 4 Prepare your cleaning formula

You can use either laundry detergent or dish washing liquid.  Mix this in a bucket with half warm water, half cleaning solution.

Step 5 Clean the vinyl siding

Climb up on your ladder and start to clean the vinyl siding.  Start at the top and work your way down the house.  Use a long-handled brush, moving the brush from side to side down the house.

Step 6 Remove mildew and other stains from your vinyl siding

For mildew and other stains, add a little bleach to your bucket of cleaning solution.  Scrub the stains off with a brush.

Step 7 Thoroughly rinse the cleaning solution off the house

Rinse the siding off with water using a power washer or garden hose as you go so that the cleaning solution doesn’t dry onto the siding.

As these step-by-step instructions show, cleaning the vinyl siding on your house is really not a hard chore to do at all.  Keeping your vinyl siding clean and well maintained will keep your house looking attractive for you and for prospective buyers when it comes time to sell your home.
