Roofing scams are on the rise.  Living in Ma & Ri we experience  hurricane winds, and heavy rains; thats when the roofing scammers will be walking a neighborhood near you very soon.  These roving con artists prey on devastation and the helplessness that many homeowners are feeling.  Single mothers and the elderly are especially vulnerable because they are often on very fixed incomes and the con artists always offer to do the roofing job at an unbelievable price.
These traveling scammers will try to act as if they have come to the area because they knew that the limited number of local contractors would not be able to handle all the work.  They often suggest that only the people who can pay the local contractors up front (before the insurance companies cut checks to homeowners) will get their roofs fixed right away.  For the most part that is total rubbish.  Local contractors can always hire outside workers temporarily to handle the additional workload.  Traveling roofers have no vested in the area and can up and take off without warning.  Local contractors are part of the community and you will probably have better luck getting any problems that may happen fixed.  Once a traveling roofing contractor moves on you will have a very hard time locating them let alone getting them to come back and fix a problem.  Keep that in mind before you sign a contract with one.
