To keep you cedar siding properly maintained and looking it’s best, you should clean the siding at least once a year. You can either hire someone to do it for you or do the job yourself. Cleaning cedar siding is not a hard job to do. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to clean cedar siding.
Step 1 Gather your necessary equipment and supplies
You will need rubber gloves, cleaning detergent, bleach, bucket, scrub brush, and power washer. You can rent or purchase a power washer at a hardware or home improvement store. If you do not want to invest in a power washer at this time you can also use an ordinary garden hose.
Step 2 Prepare your cleaning solution
Add cleaning detergent and a quarter cup of bleach to a gallon of warm water. Be sure to wear rubber gloves so that the bleach does not burn your skin.
Step 3 Scrub the cedar shingles with your cleaning solution
Use your scrub brush and cleaning solution to thoroughly scrub the cedar siding on your house. Start at the top and work your way down the side of the house. Scrub only one section at a time and do not allow the cleaning solution to dry on the house.
Step 4 Rinse the cedar siding using the power washer
Once you have finished scrubbing a section of cedar siding, use the power washer to rinse the cleaning solution from the siding. Make sure to set the power washer to the gentlest setting. You may be tempted to turn the power washer on full blast, but you can damage the cedar wood if you do this. Spray the siding using back and forth strokes. Start at the top of the house and work your way down, allowing the water to wash down the side of the house.
Continue this process of scrubbing a section of cedar siding with your cleaning solution and then washing it off with the power washer until you have cleaned all of the cedar siding on your house.
As you can see by the step-by-step instructions, cleaning your cedar siding is not a hard thing to do. It just takes a few simple pieces of equipment and supplies and some of your time and patience. Cleaning your cedar siding at least once a year is definitely worth it to keep your siding well maintained and looking beautiful.
