Installing replacement windows in your house can be a moderately easy home improvement project as long as you are patient. Here are step-by-step instructions for how to install a replacement window.
Step 1 Measure Your Windows
The first thing you need to do is measure your old windows. Measure the window jamb at the bottom, center and top. Keep the smallest measurements for both the height and width. You want your replacement windows to be about 1/4 inch smaller for both the height and width of the window opening.
Step 2 Collect the tools and supplies you will need to install your replacement windows
You will need screwdrivers, a hammer, level, utility knife, chisel, tape measure, caulking gun, interior and exterior caulking, safety glasses and shims.
Step 3 Remove interior stop molding
Place a putty knife in between the window casing and inside stop molding to remove the stop molding on each side of the window.
Step 4 Remove the lower sash
After you have the stop molding off you can remove the lower sash. If there is rope cord, remove it from the sash and remove the pulley. Cover up the opening with tin.
Step 5 Remove parting stops
The parting stops are pieces of wood dividing the inside and outside sash, and possibly one at the top of the window. Using a chisel, remove all the parting stops. You will want the jam to be flush.
Step 6 Remove outside sash
Remove and cut any cords and pulleys in the sash. Do not remove exterior stop that extends past the window jamb. Your new window will rest up against the exterior stop.
Step 7 Shim the jamb
If necessary, adjust the width of the opening.
Step 8 Test the fit of your new window
Place your new window in the opening to make sure it fits well and you still have room to make adjustments if necessary. If the window is a good fit, remove it from the opening and apply caulking across the exterior stop and over the bottom sill. This is to make sure there will be tight seal around the entire window.
Step 9 Place your window into the opening
Place your window into the center of the window. To make sure it is square you can measure diagonally from the top to the bottom on both sides. Make sure the measurements are equal. Use shims if necessary. Also use your level to make sure the window is plumb and level.
Step 10 Screw down the window into the jamb
Step 11 Install molding
You can either use the old molding or replace with new vinyl molding, using adhesive caulking.
Step 12 Adjust jamb screws
Adjust the jamb screws so that the sash will stay open.
Step 13 Caulk the window frame
If you follow these step-by-step instructions for how to install a replacement window, you will have new windows for your house in no time at all.
